The project was implemented in three districts through six (6) already identified schools. It was aimed at improving health by reducing water borne/related diseases which would lead to a reduction in related poverty, increased enrolment in schools and hence improved performance of the involved schools.
The project was originally to end in July but owing to the post election violence it was extended to December 2008.
The activities mainly centred around follow ups of the infrastructures. There was an exchange visit that was conducted for the teachers and committee members from the six schools in which STIPA is operating.
The key results included well maintained infrastructures save for a few minor defects which are being taken care of by the schools and WatSan committees. There is increased knowledge and awareness on hygiene and sanitation issues in the schools, adaptation to use of ECOSAN toilets in the schools and use of the decomposed solid waste demo-plots in the school.
Sustainability of the project is now being carried out by the School Management Committees, the school administration and the community members themselves. STIPA’s major role will be in monitoring the maintenance of the facilities to access the impact for possible scale up of the project.
